1. What is teletherapy?
Teletherapy uses video conferencing as a medium for providing therapy. One of the benefits of teletherapy is that you can receive therapy from the comfort of your home. Research has shown that teletherapy yields the same results as traditional therapy. Teletherapy can be a solution for busy parents and individuals who live far from therapy clinics.
2. How do you incorporate teletherapy into your treatments?
Teletherapy uses live, video streaming to create an in-person “feel” that includes interactive games and exercises. Many children respond well to teletherapy because using technology can be very motivating. Furthermore, teletherapy incorporates toys and games that the child has access to in the home. Using objects the child can access on a daily basis can help increase carryover of skills outside of the therapy session.
3. What do you need as a client/parent to use teletherapy?
All you need is a reliable internet connection, a computer and a webcam. You need a quiet space and possibly a high chair in order to stay in within camera view.
4. Do the parents need to be present for each session?
Parents and/or caregivers are a key component of therapy especially when it comes to toddlers. At least one parent or caregiver should be present during each session. Therapy sessions are designed in a way that empowers parents and caregivers to feel comfortable using tips and strategies taught by the Speech-Language Pathologist.
5. What materials are used in teletherapy?
A session can include the use of videos, worksheets, stories, PowerPoint “shows,” toys and household objects. Overall, the types of materials chosen depends on the age of the child, the child’s goals and the child’s ability to sustain attention.
6. Will you need to buy materials to use during teletherapy?
All materials are online or already found in your home. You may be asked to print an activity that will be used during the session. Toys may be recommended but the purchase of new toys is not required. Prior to each appointment, parents receive a therapy plan so that they know what to expect during each session.
7. What type of speech and language disorders can you treat via teletherapy?
Teletherapy is used to treat clients with expressive and receptive language disorders. Furthermore, articulation, apraxia, fluency and some feeding disorders may also be treated. The best way to find out if your child is a candidate is by consulting with a Speech-Language Pathologist that provides teletherapy.
8. Is my child too young for teletherapy?
Speech and language therapy for toddlers and young children is focused on providing a lot of parent education and modeling. Teletherapy for toddlers is no different. During your sessions, a Speech-Language Pathologist will guide you while you participate in speech therapy activities with your child.
9. How often is teletherapy provided?
The frequency of treatment is determined based on the family and client needs. Typically, children that are 4 years old and younger benefit from shorter but more frequent therapy sessions. In contrast, older children can participate in longer sessions. A Speech-Language Pathologist will collaborate with you to determine what plan works best for your child.
